Our History
The story of the British Section is closely tied to the history of the Lycée International itself.
- 1952: The school was originally founded in the Château d'Hennemont to serve the children of military personnel stationed at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe).
- A British Foundation: The British Section was one of the founding sections, established to provide a continuity of education for families of personnel serving in the NATO command.
- Evolution: When SHAPE relocated to Belgium in 1967, the school transitioned into a unique public-sector experiment in international education. Since then, the British Section has evolved from a military-support unit into a thriving community of over 800 pupils from diverse international backgrounds.
Today, we maintain our heritage through a commitment to British educational values – critical thinking, confidence in public speaking, and a strong sense of community – while being firmly rooted in the French landscape.
Our Section
Our School Network
The British Section is unique in its "hub and spoke" model. While our administrative centre is at the Lycée International de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, our pupils are educated across a network of French state schools. This structure ensures that our pupils are not isolated in an international bubble; instead, they are woven into the fabric of French society while maintaining an uncompromisingly British academic identity.
Beyond the classroom
At the British Section, education is not confined to the classroom. Our enrichment programme is designed to challenge pupils to be curious about the world around them, engage with global issues, support local initiatives, and make a positive difference to their communities.

The British Section is actively seeking teachers to join our Supply Teacher Register. Candidates must be native English speakers with qualifications and experience in English speaking schools.
